The City of Charlottetown invites the public to take part in historic tours of City Hall and the Fire Department as part of Doors Open on Saturday, June 1.

The Doors Open event, organized by Creative PEI, is an international festival that allows art, culture and heritage buildings, not generally accessible to the public, to open their doors for a day. Many downtown locations in Charlottetown are participating and offering tours.

Visit Charlottetown City Hall (199 Queen Street) between 12 p.m. and 3 p.m. on Saturday, June 1 for a guided historical tour. City Hall, a National Historic Site, was built in 1888 to house Charlottetown City Council and municipal services, including the Police Department and Fire Department, of the then 35 year old City of Charlottetown. City Council had previously been meeting in the market building on Queen Square before it was decided that a new purpose built, municipal building was to be constructed to house all City services and staff. Some of the most talented architects of the day, Charles B. Chappell and Lemuel J. Phillips, were hired to design the Romanesque Revival style building and the finest craftsmen built the stunning brick and stone structure. Staff and volunteers will be providing tours of the second floor of City Hall, the most historic area of the building, every half hour.

The Charlottetown Fire Department will also be providing tours between 10 a.m. and 12 p.m. at Station 1 (89 Kent Street). The event will include a short tour of the building and equipment, including the restored engines. There will be displays and activities taking place on the main floor as well as tours of the 3rd floor, with displays of many historic pieces of fire service equipment. There will also be a photographic display of some of the greatest fires that have occurred in Charlottetown through the years, as well as pictures of past Fire Chiefs and firefighters.

Everyone is welcome to attend. City Hall will be open to the public from 12 p.m. – 3 p.m. and the Charlottetown Fire Department will offer tours of Station 1 from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m.
