Posted on 01/19/2021
The City is pleased to announce that the first of twelve outdoor rinks is opening today (January 19) at 12 noon for public use, which will be the Gordie Griffin Multi-Sport Facility located at Hillsborough Park Community Centre – 199 Patterson Drive.

The City’s Parks and Recreation Department is busy working to construct a total of twelve outdoor rinks this season. Five of those rinks are under construction and will be opening in the coming days. This includes the rinks located at the Elmer MacFadyen Memorial Recreational Complex, Founder’s Hall Greenspace, Orlebar Park, Sandlewood Park and Mulberry Park. Staff are currently preparing another six outdoor rinks which are expected to be operational within the next week, weather permitting.

“We are so pleased and excited to see the outdoor rinks opening to the public,” said Councillor Terry Bernard, Chair of the Parks, Recreation and Leisure Activities Committee. “I know staff have been working very hard in challenging weather to get these outdoor facilities operational. With the Gordie Griffin Multi-Sport Facility opening today, and many more rinks to follow soon after, it will be great to see children and families enjoying the outdoors.”

The public is encouraged to check on the status of the rinks by visiting the City’s website at www.charlottetown.ca and selecting the Skating and Skiing page in the Recreation & Leisure drop-down menu. The outdoor rinks webpage is updated daily Monday through Friday. The ideal temperature for the outdoor rinks is about -6 degrees Celsius, and they will be maintained as long as weather conditions continue to be suitable.

All participants are required to wear CSA approved helmets while on the outdoor rinks.

The City of Charlottetown wants to remind the public to continue to follow the Chief Public Health Office’s recommendations, which include physical distancing, frequent hand washing and hand sanitizing, as well as respecting the limits on public gatherings.
