Charlottetown City Council approved and made public the schematic design for the Simmons Sports Centre at a regular meeting of the Council on Monday, January 10, 2021.
“I am very pleased with the schematic design of the Simmons Sports Centre project. I know everyone on Council and everyone in the greater Charlottetown area will be happy to see this important step of the project come to fruition,” said Councillor Terry Bernard, chair of the Parks and Recreation committee. “This important piece of infrastructure will help increase our recreation capacity as our City continues to grow and develop,” said Bernard.
City Council originally approved staff to move forward on this project and on May 17, 2021, staff kicked off the design process at a meeting with DSRA Architecture Inc and I.B. Storey Inc. A public open house was held in early July, at which members of the public were able to view preliminary designs and ask questions of staff and offer input. Public input was accepted until July 12, 2021.
“This design stems from an open process that has involved City staff, contractors, and public input. I am very pleased to see the resulting design that City Council approved at tonight’s meeting,” said Mayor Philip Brown. “I remain hopeful that we will see this incredibly important infrastructure project kicked off in spring of 2022. We have had very encouraging conversations with our Member of Parliament Sean Casey, and I am hopeful that this project will begin this spring,” said Brown.
