Funding to support a new programming series for seniors

This year, the City of Charlottetown, alongside the Seniors’ Engagement Committee, is launching a programming series for that support the City’s commitment to becoming an age-friendly community. The new project will begin this spring and feature a series of 10 education sessions and podcasts ranging from active living, to accessing government benefits, to celebrating diversity and promoting inclusion.

The project entitled Building an Age-Friendly Charlottetown through Community Engagement and Education builds on the findings and recommendations of the seniors’ consultations that were held in November 2021. The goal is to increase access to programs, provide additional tools and resources and connect seniors with programs and services.

“This project is an example of the City of Charlottetown listening to the community and acting on the identified needs,” said Councillor Terry Bernard, Chair of the Parks, Recreation and Leisure Activities Committee. “We are pleased to launch an innovative program that contributes to building an age-friendly Charlottetown and helps foster a culture where older adults can thrive.”

The project is being made possible thanks in part to the Government of Canada’s New Horizons for Seniors Program, which provided $23,667 in funding. The goal of the program is to support projects that help improve the well-being of seniors and foster social inclusion and engagement in their communities.

The World Health Organization’s Global Network for Age-friendly Cities and Communities is a group of government organizations committed to creating physical and social environments that promote healthy and active ageing and a good quality of life for their older residents. The City of Charlottetown is actively working towards developing an action plan and meeting these commitments.
