The City of Charlottetown is advising community members of traffic-related impacts from the 18th annual Prince Edward Island Marathon, supporting the Canadian Mental Health Association – PEI, scheduled for this weekend, October 15 and 16, 2022.
Motorists are asked to use caution when travelling throughout the city during the weekend and plan ahead, as there will be traffic delays along the routes on Saturday, October 15 and Sunday, October 16.
Saturday, October 15, 2022
The 10K Run/Walk, 5K Run/Walk, 2K Wheelchair, and Kids Fox Trot will take place on Saturday, October 15, 2022, starting at Prince Street by Confederation Landing.
The following roads will be closed as follows:
- Water Street between Prince Street and Haviland Street, from 7:30 a.m. to 11 a.m.
- Haviland Street / Rochford Street between Water Street and Kent Street, from 7:30 a.m. to 11 a.m.
- Victoria Park Roadway, from 7:30 a.m. to 10:30 a.m.
Traffic delays are expected along the route from approximately 7:30 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. and will impact Queen Elizabeth Drive, Charlotte Drive, Edinburgh Drive, Brittany Drive, and Maplewood Crescent.
Sunday, October 16, 2022
The full marathon, team relay, half-marathon Run/Walk, and 16K Run/Walk will take place on Sunday, October 16, 2022, starting at the corner of Queen Street and Grafton Street. Due to changes resulting from post-tropical storm Fiona, the full marathon is now a double loop of the half marathon and will take place entirely within Charlottetown city limits.
The following roads will be closed as follows:
- Great George Street between Kent Street and Grafton Street, from 5 a.m. to 3 p.m.
- Grafton Street between Queen Street and Church Street, from 5 a.m. to 3 p.m.
- Sherwood Road between Brackley Point Road and Malpeque Road / Route #2, from 7:30 a.m. to 2 p.m.
- University Avenue / Great George Street between Kirkwood Avenue and Grafton Street, from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m.
Traffic delays are expected along the route during the duration of the full marathon. Runners will be active along the Victoria Park Roadway, Queen Elizabeth Drive, Charlotte Drive, Edinburgh Drive, Brittany Drive, Maplewood Crescent, Moreau Drive, Spruce Street, North Queen Elizabeth Drive, Belvedere Avenue, Royalty Junction Road, Brackley Point Road, Sherwood Road, University Avenue, and Great George Street.
In addition to street closures, there will be no parking in the following areas on Sunday, October 16, from midnight until approximately 3 p.m. (or until the event conclusion):
- Grafton Street, between Church Street and Queen Street
- Great George Street, between Grafton Street and Fitzroy Street
- Kent Street, between Queen Street and Great George Street
Event organizers have requested that participants not park close to churches in downtown Charlottetown on Sunday morning to reserve parking spots for residents attending service.
