Community members invited to provide input on annual budget until January 27

Residents, stakeholders and local businesses are invited to have their say on the City of Charlottetown’s 2023/2024 annual capital and operating budgets. Each year, the City undertakes its annual budget process to help plan for the services and programs residents and businesses rely on every day. Community members are invited to provide input on what they would like to see reflected in the upcoming budgets. The deadline for feedback is Friday, January 27 at 12 p.m.

The capital budget funds infrastructure projects, including the renewal of existing assets, and helps us prepare for future growth. Examples of capital expenses may include:

  • Infrastructure development, building and construction projects (e.g. new roads, sidewalks, multi-use paths and active transportation lanes)
  • Park and greenspace improvements
  • Fleet expansion and maintenance (e.g. purchasing new fire trucks and snow plows)

The operational budget supports the day-to-day expenses of the municipality such as:

  • Delivery of protective services
  • Maintenance of water and sewer, parks and trails, roads and community facilities
  • Events and tourism
  • Utilities, wages and many other important services.

Feedback can be submitted in the following ways:

  • By mail, or drop off to City Hall at the following address:

Following the Committee meetings and community engagement, the recommended budgets will be brought forward to Council for approval.

“Charlottetown is a vibrant community with a growing population which comes with both opportunities and challenges. The annual budget provides an opportunity for us to set our collective goals. As a Council, we want to hear from as many people as possible to ensure we are prioritizing investments in the areas that are most important to them.” – Mayor Philip Brown

“As a newly elected member and as Chair of the Finance, Audit, Tendering and Administration Committee, I am looking forward to playing a leadership role in the development of both our capital and operational budgets for 2023/24. Our committee anticipates that our external stakeholders and our citizens will welcome the opportunity to provide input to this important exercise.” – Councillor John McAleer, Chair of the Finance, Audit, Tendering and Administration Committee

“The annual budget provides direction on the key projects and initiatives that will help us deliver on our new Strategic Plan (2022 to 2026). To that end, hearing from residents, businesses, stakeholders, community groups and Council on what is most important to them is integral to moving forward as an inclusive and progressive city.” – Interim CAO, Donna Waddell
