Changes to Tourism Accommodation Levy

Changes to Tourism Accommodation Levy Effective March 28, 2023
Posted on 02/24/2023
The next stage of the City of Charlottetown’s Tourism Accommodation Levy (TAL) comes into effect March 28, 2023 to include all tourism accommodation operators within city limits, regardless of the size of operation. Those operators who will be impacted by this change will receive a letter explaining the remittance process, including a sample remittance form and contact information for assistance.

The TAL is set at three per cent of the daily room rental rate and the revenue is evenly distributed between Discover Charlottetown Inc., Meetings and Conventions PEI, and the Charlottetown Special Events Reserve Fund which assists the City and its partners in attracting special events to Charlottetown which have a pronounced tourism focus and strong potential for incremental tourism growth.

The second and final reading of amendments to the Tourism Accommodation Levy Bylaw was passed at City Council’s regular monthly meeting on May 13, 2019. Bylaw amendments allowing the application of the TAL on properties that were previously exempt (under 10 rooms) were passed on August 29, 2019, and effective January 1, 2020. Following the amendments, City Council decided to delay the implementation of the TAL application.
