Applications for the $1,000 David “Eli” MacEachern bursary are now being accepted by the City of Charlottetown. The annual award was established in honour of Prince Edward Island’s first Olympic Gold Medalist and will be presented to a student graduating in the spring of 2020 from Charlottetown Rural High School, Colonel Gray High School, or École François-Buote.

While COVID-19 remains a concern and in-person classes have been cancelled through at least May 11, City officials felt it was important to proceed with the application process for students in their graduating year.

In order to qualify, applicants must be Charlottetown residents who have been dedicated to excellence in sport during their high school career; competed with honour, fairness, sportsmanship, and appreciation of others; demonstrated a passion for life, learning, and excellence; and, must be continuing their education and development in a chosen field of sport.

Interested students are asked to write a short personal statement illustrating how they exemplify the qualities outlined in the bursary criteria, as well as their plans for continued education and development. Given current COVID-19 social distancing requirements, emailed applications are preferred; however, students lacking access to email may submit applications to the attention of Laurel Lea via mail to PO Box 98, Charlottetown, PE, C1A 7K2 or by dropping off their application to the secure drop box located just inside the front door at City Hall (199 Queen Street). Applications are due by May 1.
