Charlottetown to Host Third Annual Fix It Fair
Posted on 09/30/2019
The City of Charlottetown is gearing up to host its third annual Fix It Fair. The free event will include a Repair Café, workshops, booths and more.

This unique event will connect Charlottetown residents with community resources, teach practical repair skills and provide opportunities to learn about different ways to practice sustainability. It will be held at a new location, the West Royalty Community Centre (1 Kirkdale Road), on Saturday, November 2 from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. The theme of this year’s Fix It Fair is Waste Reduction. The City of Charlottetown recently conducted a single-use plastic survey, which received more than 1,200 responses. The Repair Café helps reduce waste by assisting with the repair of items that might otherwise be destined for the landfill, and each of the hourly workshops will focus on reducing waste.

The main feature of the Fix It Fair is the Repair Café, which is a concept that communities throughout North America and Europe are embracing. The Repair Café will include talented fixers from a variety of expertise who have volunteered their services to assist in the free repair of various household items throughout this event. The role of the fixers is not only to repair broken items but to share their knowledge and teach you how to perform similar repairs yourself!

Participants can bring one item (such as a small appliance or item of clothing) per person to be repaired by the skilled on-site ‘fixers’, free of charge. Pre-registration is required for the repair café.

Interested in participating in the Fix It Fair as a ‘fixer’? The City is looking for volunteers who have repair skills for all kinds of household items including: clothing, small household appliances, electronics, jewelry, etc.

As part of the Fix It Fair, there will be free workshops that will cover a broad range of topics. The details are as follows:
10 a.m. DIY Beeswax Food Wrap: Learn how easy it is to make bees wax food wraps to reduce single-use plastic.
11 a.m. Smart Choices: Stop Wasting Energy in your Home, hosted by efficiencyPEI.
12 p.m. Tips and Tricks to Reduce Food Waste, hosted by the PEI Food Exchange.

Pre-register for the repair café or hourly workshops by visiting the event page under Events and Initiatives.
