Posted on 05/10/2021
The first citizen satisfaction survey completed by MDB Insight for the City of Charlottetown between March 17, 2021, and April 14, 2021, shows that 9 in 10 Charlottetown residents are satisfied with the level of services provided by the City of Charlottetown.

Additionally, 9 in 10 citizens rated their quality of life in Charlottetown as good, very good, or excellent.

“It’s important for us as a city to ensure we are taking in and considering feedback from our citizens and residents. Surveys such as this one are just another tool that can help us keep focused on what matters to the people of Charlottetown”, said Councillor Kevin Ramsay, chair of the Strategic Priorities and Intergovernmental Cooperation Committee.

Services such as transit safety (99%), fire & rescue (99%), police services (90%), festivals & events (89%), and recreation programming (86%) were met with high approval/performance scores.

21% of citizens stated that increased/more affordable housing in the City would lead to improved quality of life. 17% of respondents identified more non-car transportation infrastructure, such as public transit and active transportation lanes, as areas they would like to see more focus.

“While I am pleased to see such high satisfaction amongst residents with the services the city currently delivers, we know that there is always room for improvement,” said Councillor Ramsay. “Non-car transportation infrastructure and increased affordable housing options were top of mind for many. I look forward to the opportunity to work with our provincial and federal partners, and all other stakeholders to continue to improve on these critical components of our City.”

Other findings from the survey include:

- 77% of citizens would prefer the City pursue maintaining property tax increases at the rate of inflation in order to maintain service levels, while 14% would like to see property taxes reduced by reducing services.
-93% of citizens approved of the City’s tree planting and maintenance efforts.
- 96% of citizens approved of City efforts in the maintenance of parks and green space, while the City’s comfort and cleanliness reached 97% approval.

The survey was completed using a mix of cellphones and landlines. A total of 500 interviews were completed, with a margin of error of +/- 4.5%.
