Posted on 04/12/2021
The City of Charlottetown would like to announce the release of the 2020 Community Sustainability Annual Report. This report outlines the progress made towards the goals and actions of the Integrated Community Sustainability Plan (ICSP) in 2020. The ICSP, released in 2017, was developed in consultation with the public to provide direction for the realization of the community’s sustainability goals.

The goals and actions of the ICSP fall under ten major themes: Water; Energy; Transportation; Food; Healthy Economy; Infrastructure and the Built Environment; People and Places; Arts, Culture and Heritage; Active Healthy Living; and Nature. In recent years ‘Waste’ was identified as a stand-alone theme of high interest to the public as well as various sectors and levels of government. The “Waste” theme was added to the report in 2019. Developments on each of these areas is discussed in the Community Sustainability Annual Report.

The report highlights many successes accomplished in 2020 including the:

• Completion of an energy performance study assessing all City facilities and the development of a retrofit strategy;
• Release of the City’s Climate Risk and Resilience Report and Recommendations;
• Launch of the Charlottetown Food Asset Map;
• Expansion of Charlottetown’s active transportation network;
• Release of a public street and park tree inventory;
• Planting of a native plant garden in the Victoria Park Arboretum;
• Creation of Imagine Charlottetown, a bank of community ideas for public art;
• Joining of the Canadian Collaboration for Sustainable Procurement.

As it did around the world, the COVID-19 pandemic introduced many challenges to City operations throughout 2020. The City of Charlottetown worked continuously to prioritize public and staff safety while still providing as many programs and services as possible. The many ways the City adapted are highlighted in the ‘Adapting to COVID-19’ section of the report.
