City to Begin Fall Hydrant Flushing Program

City to Begin Fall Hydrant Flushing Program
Posted on 09/09/2021
The City of Charlottetown's Water and Sewer Utility wishes to advise the public that its fall maintenance check and bi-annual Hydrant Flushing Program is expected to begin on September 27th and take place over a four- to six-week period.

During this time, hydrants in the Capital City will be operated at full capacity for about three to five minutes each until the water runs clear.

Water is released from the hydrants at a high velocity to ensure proper hydrant operation and flush the pipe network's sediment. Water from these hydrants will be allowed to flow freely during testing. It cannot be captured at such a high velocity for recycling. The public is asked to avoid hydrants as they are being flushed.

The Hydrant Flushing Program ensures every hydrant and water main in Charlottetown is functioning correctly. The program is based on best practices in other jurisdictions and considered necessary preventative maintenance to ensure water quality and improve public safety.

The maintenance may cause a temporary discolouration of the water supply or a slight drop in water pressure. The Water and Sewer Utility thanks the public for their patience and cooperation as this important task is completed.
