The City of Charlottetown is moving ahead with a Climate Action Plan aimed at helping the City build climate and extreme weather resilience while also reducing our contribution to global climate change through the reduction of greenhouse gas emissions.
“The City has a longstanding commitment to environment and sustainability,” said Mayor Philip Brown. “The Climate Action Plan will strengthen and reinforce these efforts, aligning the City’s climate action work with provincial and community priorities.”
The Climate Action Plan will build on and integrate the City's current Integrated Community Sustainability Plan and Community Energy Plan to create a comprehensive Climate Action Plan. Phase One of the climate action planning process began in January 2023 and will end in April 2023. In this phase, the City will collect background information on the climate work, capacity, plans and approaches currently taking place in Charlottetown and PEI and benchmarking relative to comparable municipalities. The findings will inform the next phase of the project, which is the full development of the action plan.
A key component of Phase One is gathering input from the community, key stakeholders and rightsholders to understand how climate change and extreme weather have impacted Charlottetown, how the community thinks the Climate Action Plan should be developed, and how we can improve climate readiness together.
To collect this information, the City is inviting residents to complete a short, online survey and provide input on how to best develop a Climate Action Plan that meets the needs of the community. In addition to the current state analysis and research being done, the survey results will inform the goals and guiding principles for Phase Two of the project, expected to start later in 2023. Phase Two will include more extensive community outreach and engagement.
This survey will be open for responses from Monday, February 6 to Sunday, February 19 at 11:59 p.m. and can be accessed at

“We know that, while all of us are affected by the changing climate, vulnerable communities are disproportionately impacted. We’re committed to hearing from these communities and ensuring that all voices are heard on this important issue,” said Councillor Terry Bernard, Chair of the Environment and Sustainability Standing Committee. “I encourage all residents to complete this survey and to participate in future engagement opportunities for this project so we can plan appropriately for the future.”
