The City of Charlottetown maintains about 155 km of concrete sidewalks and asphalt multi-use pathways and is focused on providing a safe environment for pedestrians all year round. Public Works crews work on winter maintenance operations including de-icing, sidewalk and street clearing, and snow hauling as dictated by the weather.
Salt is not always the most effective or efficient means of clearing sidewalks of ice, however, there are situations where salt is warranted.
Sidewalks will be salted by Public Works crews following:
• a freezing rain/ice pellet event;
• a warming then quick-cooling weather pattern which has caused ice to form; or
• a weather event with no noticeable improvement in sidewalk conditions for a prolonged time after its end.
Sidewalks will not be salted when:
• snow can be scraped to reveal mostly bare sidewalk
• sunny weather conditions and rising temperatures are forecast for after the snow has been plowed
• another weather event is expected in the next 24-36 hours
• temperatures are too low for salt to be effective
These lists are not exhaustive but are indicative of sidewalk maintenance priorities.
