New exhibit marks the 105th anniversary of the Battle of Vimy Ridge

To help mark the 105th anniversary of the Battle of Vimy Ridge (April 9-12, 1917), the City of Charlottetown has partnered with The Prince Edward Island Regiment Museum to launch an exhibit that explores the history of the First World War.

The display entitled, We Remember, highlights some of the local veterans who served in the First World War and artefacts from the period.

Located on the first floor of the Confederation Court Mall, the exhibit will be available for viewing during mall hours until June 3, 2022.

During the process of creating the exhibit, The Prince Edward Island Regiment Museum and City of Charlottetown Archives staff searched through their collections and contributed numerous veterans’ photos, uniforms, medals and implements that were used in the First World War. One such item is a wooden device with a compass used by the Royal Flying Corps pilots to hold aeronautical charts upright while they flew the plane. The artefact contains straps that held the item to the pilot’s leg. In the days before sophisticated navigation systems, it was a convenient method of checking location and mapping.

For safety, visitors are reminded to follow physical distancing guidelines, to avoid large gatherings and to follow COVID-19 protocols. For more information, visit

The City of Charlottetown and the Prince Edward Island Regiment Museum would like to thank the Confederation Court Mall for providing the exhibit space and all the individuals and organizations who generously contributed and helped make this exhibit possible. It is through these donations that we learn about our past and share the knowledge with the public.
