Bike Bus

Bike Bus is a global movement. In a growing number of cities and towns around the world it is a regular mode of transportation to safely and joyfully bike with kids to and from school. Think of a bike bus like a school bus, but instead of a big yellow vehicle, it’s a large group of people—kids, parents, and trained ‘bus drivers’ on bikes — biking to and from school along a fixed route and schedule. School buses run on gas or electricity; bike buses run on joy!
Why participate in a Bike Bus?

The benefits of Bike Buses are endless! A Bike Bus offers a fun, safe, and healthy way for students to get to and from school while reducing traffic congestion and pollution. It promotes daily exercise, builds independence, and improves focus for better academic performance. Riding in a supervised group enhances safety and road awareness, while parents save time and fuel. Congestion at school drop-off and pick-up is reduced when there are fewer cars. Plus, it fosters friendships and a stronger school community!

Is a Bike Bus in Charlottetown safe?

Yes, the Bike Bus provides increased safety in numbers and is supervised by volunteers trained in group bike ride training and road safety. Student participants will also receive road safety training before the program begins. The Bike Bus will follow designated safe routes and adhere to all traffic laws. Helmets are mandatory.

How can I get involved?

Registrations for the Bike Bus will begin the fall. If your school is participating, a sign-up form and permission slip will be circulated mid-September. At this time there will also be a sign-up form for parents and guardians to volunteer.

Teachers can also volunteer as Bike Bus leaders, by completing the same volunteer sign-up sheet.

How can I start a Bike Bus in my own school community?

If you’re interested in starting a Bike Bus in your own community, it will be important to have support from from school administration. We suggest you start by speaking with your school principal and teachers. You should also seek out cycling enthusiasts in your school community. This could include both teachers and parents and guardians of students.

Once you’ve found some interested Bike Bus champions, email [email protected] to get started!

Would your school like to allow upper level students (Grade 6 or Grade 11/12) to volunteer as Junior Bike Bus Leaders?
These Junior Leaders would have similar responsibilities to the parent/staff volunteers and would need to attend both
the adult group ride training session and the student participant training. There will always be at least one adult on each route.

Have you had any preliminary interest in a Bike Bus within your school community?

Do you have any questions about Bike Bus?

Please check the following to be able to participate in the fall Bike Bus intake.

I understand that my school must participate in a training day for both student participants and parent/teacher volunteers.

I understand we need to designate at least one volunteer to route mapping. This person will need to participate in a short training session with City staff.

I understand the school administration and parent/teacher volunteers will be responsible for day to day operations of our Bike Bus.

I understand that I, or someone I designate, must attend the virtual Bike Bus Information Session on September 18, 2025 at 3:30 PM.
