PROJECT OVERVIEW

Calling all artists! The City of Charlottetown invites practicing artists and creators to submit digital images of their original art to be considered for a public art project. The four selected artists will have their artwork printed onto a vinyl wrap and installed on traffic control cabinets at street light intersections around Charlottetown.

HOW IT WORKS

  1. Submit an application with examples of past work, up to five images.
  2. An independent jury will review all submissions and recommend four artists who will create or submit artwork for one traffic control cabinet each.
  3. Selected artists will be paid $1,500 (plus HST if applicable) for this commission.
  4. Selected artists will collaborate with the project team to create a new original artwork or refine existing artwork for reproduction on a traffic control cabinet.
  5. The City will finance and manage the printing and installation of the vinyl wrap, which will be displayed on traffic control cabinets for up to five years.

ELIGIBILITY
This project is open to all artists who reside in Charlottetown or Epekwitk/Prince Edward Island.

We encourage artists who identify as BIPOC (Black, Indigenous, People of Colour), LGBTQS2SIA+, and/or people with disabilities to apply.


MORE INFORMATION

To add more art to the City of Charlottetown and advance the strategies and actions of the Cultural Policy, the City and the Arts Advisory Board wish to provide a paid artist opportunity for artists to contribute to the vitality and attractiveness of intersections throughout the City.

There is no theme for this call. The final wrap designs should be vibrant and bold, with sufficient detail and scale to be viewed by those walking, biking, rolling, driving, or taking transit near the traffic control cabinets.

Selected artists will be paid $1,500 (plus HST if application) for this commission.

Selected artists will collaborate with the City’s project team to develop the final artwork. The City’s project team will provide technical support as needed, which includes providing the dimensions of the traffic control cabinets, supporting artwork documentation if required, providing relevant historical context for the area, and assisting with final file preparations.

The final artwork will be subject to approval by the Arts Advisory Board under the City’s Public Art Policy.

The City will finance and manage the printing and installation of the vinyl to the traffic control cabinets. The final designs will be transferred onto an anti-graffiti adhesive and installed by a local printing company at locations determined by the City and the Arts Advisory Board. The vinyl wraps will be displayed on traffic control cabinets for up to five years.

SUBMISSION MATERIALS
The following must be submitted through an online application form by 11:59 p.m. local time on November 22, 2024.

  • ARTIST CONTACT INFORMATION: Please provide your name, artist name (if different), full address, email, phone number, website, and if you charge HST.
  • ARTIST STATEMENT: 500 words maximum that describes your artistic practice, approach, style, or themes in your art.
  • EXAMPLES OF PAST WORK: Applicants may submit a portfolio of no more than five (5) high-res images of original work to be considered in JPEG, PNG, GIF or PDF file format. Please do not include sketches, designs, or concepts of artwork for the traffic control cabinets. Selected artists will be chosen based on existing or past work.
  • LIST OF WORK: A list of details of artworks submitted, including file name, title, artwork date, and medium.
  • OPTIONAL SELF-IDENTIFICATION: If you are comfortable doing so, please indicate if you identify with one or more of these groups: BIPOC (Black, Indigenous, People of Colour), LGBTQS2SIA+, and/or people with disabilities.

SELECTION PROCESS
Four (4) artists will be selected to have their art printed on traffic control cabinets. The selection of successful artists will be a hybrid process that includes juried and curated artwork.

A peer selection panel of arts sector and community representatives will review all images submitted and score them using the table below. The selection panel will recommend four (4) artworks to be included in the exhibit.

In alignment with the City of Charlottetown’s Cultural Policy’s Vision as well as the Values of Accessibility, Inclusivity, and Reconciliation, the City’s Arts Advisory Board reserves the right to commission one of the four total selected artists (25%) at the discretion of the Arts Advisory Board.

The table below describes how the jury will assess the artwork that is submitted: 

Portfolio 

The applicant’s portfolio demonstrates a consistently high level of artistic skill and craftsmanship;

The submitted artworks are visually compelling, with clear artistic intent, strong composition, and effective colour usage;

The artist’s work exhibits a sustained commitment to their practice and innovation.

Technical Considerations

The applicant’s portfolio reflects a style, format, medium, and scale that can be effectively adapted to a traffic control cabinet wrap.

Thematic Alignment The artist’s statement clearly articulates the themes, concepts, and approaches behind their work;

The artist and their artwork have the potential to meaningfully engage the public, enhance public space, and spark conversation.

ADDITIONAL DETAILS

  • Traffic control cabinets around the City vary considerably in size and style. Some are mounted on traffic signal poles, others on concrete bases. 
  • The vinyl will be applied to all four sides and the top of the cabinets.
  • The artwork will be printed on anti-graffiti and anti-sticker material.
  • Artists will sign an agreement with the City, including the terms and conditions of the project.
  • Artist will need to be available for up to two meetings during the winter to work with the project team to finalize the design layout with the City and third-party vendor installing the wraps. Additional communication via email may also be necessary. The $1,500 (plus HST if applicable) payment to successful artists includes the artist fee, meeting time, travel and parking, license to use the final artwork, and materials required to create an original artwork (if applicable).
  • The ownership of all artworks submitted with this application remains with the artist. Copyright of the work and all intellectual property shall remain with the artist. The City of Charlottetown may not use any work submitted or included in the installation for any purpose without additional permission from the artists.
  • The City reserves the right to not proceed with awarding this commission.

Calling all artists! The City of Charlottetown invites artists at all levels of experience and working in any medium to submit images or copies of their original art for a temporary lightbox exhibit in downtown Charlottetown.

HOW IT WORKS

  1. Submit images of your artwork (any medium) on the theme of “Your Community in Bloom” – What does Community in Bloom mean to you? Apply by July 15 at noon (full submission instructions below).
  2. An independent jury reviews all submissions and makes recommendations.
  3. The City prints reproductions of your artwork on adhesive material and installs the artwork in double-sided lightboxes, displayed on lampposts in downtown Charlottetown from the week of August 26 to November 8, 2024.
  4. If your artwork is selected, you’ll receive an artist fee of $450 (plus HST if applicable).

 

MORE INFORMATION
To celebrate the City of Charlottetown hosting the 30th annual Communities in Bloom National Symposium and Awards Ceremonies in October, this lightbox exhibit has the theme of Your Community in Bloom and asks artists to interpret the natural world (plants, flowers, trees, fields, lands, beaches, streams, rivers, waters, animals, etc.) through the lens of community. Show us what Community in Bloom means to you! The result will be an outdoor exhibit showcasing the artistic talent of Island artists and the cultural significance of the landscapes and waterways around us.

The exhibit will feature twenty 24” W x 36” H lightboxes that will be installed on downtown lampposts from the week of August 26 until November 8, 2024.

Artists who are chosen for the exhibit will receive an artist fee of $450 CAD (plus HST, if applicable).

The City of Charlottetown will produce and install the lightboxes.

  • HIGH-QUALITY IMAGES: Applicants may submit no more than three (3) high-res images to be considered for inclusion in the exhibition. Images must either be high-quality .JPEG, .PNG, .TIF, or .HEIC image files, or full-size 24” W x 36” H PDFs. Please only submit existing or completed work.
  • LIST OF WORK: A list of details of works submitted, including file name, title, artwork date, and original medium (if applicable). Please note that only one work per successful artist will be selected for the exhibit and will be duplicated on both sides of the lightboxes. Full details of the successful artwork will be featured on the City of Charlottetown website throughout the exhibit.

There will be a total of 20 artists selected for this exhibit. The selection of successful artists will be a hybrid process that will include both juried and curated artworks.

A peer selection panel of arts sector and community representatives will review all images submitted and score them using the table below. The selection panel will recommend between 15 and 20 artworks to be included in the exhibit.

In alignment with the City of Charlottetown’s Cultural Policy’s Vision as well as the Values of Accessibility, Excellence, Inclusivity, and Reconciliation, the City’s Arts Advisory Board reserves the right to commission up to 5 of the 20 total artworks at the discretion of the Arts Advisory Board.

The table below describes how the jury will assess the artwork that is submitted:

Interesting and original qualities that add to the artwork’s appeal.

ADDITIONAL DETAILS

  • The lightboxes are 24 inches wide by 36 inches high and will be hung on lampposts in portrait orientation. Please take note of these dimensions when selecting your work.
  • Files submitted will be printed on an adhesive substrate and applied to the lightboxes.
  • The lightboxes are double-sided, and the selected artwork will be duplicated on both sides of the lightboxes.
  • Submissions of images that exceed the 25 MB e-mail limit may be submitted with the file-sharing service of your choice (Google Drive, WeTransfer, Dropbox, etc.). The individual submitting is responsible for ensuring the files are downloadable and accessible.
  • Charlottetown and Prince Edward Island-based artists will be preferred, but this opportunity is open to all artists. We encourage artists who identify as BIPOC (Black, Indigenous, People of Colour), LGBTQ2S+, and/or people with disabilities to apply.

The City of Charlottetown invites artists to submit images or copies of their original art for a temporary lightbox exhibit in Charlottetown, which will be installed on downtown lampposts from Tuesday, March 5, to Monday, May 6, 2024.

The exhibit will feature fifteen 24” W x 36” H lightboxes illuminating the work of local artists.

Selected artists to be included in the exhibit will receive a $175 CDN (+HST, if applicable) artist fee – following the CARFAC-RAAV Minimum Recommended Fee Schedule.

The City of Charlottetown will produce and install the lightboxes.


THEME
In the Spring, Charlottetown will come alive with music, with several exciting events and celebrations in the capital, including Music PEI Week and the East Coast Music Awards.

To add to the vibrancy of downtown Charlottetown during these activities, the City of Charlottetown invites Island artists to submit work that aligns with the theme of Music and Sounds of the Island.

Places resonate with melodies and music as diverse as their history, people, and landscapes. From the lapping rhythm of ocean waves to traditional folk music, the Island’s soundscape is part of the auditory identity that makes it so unique. This lightbox exhibit asks artists to interpret the music and sounds of the Island in visual form, creating a sensory experience in our downtown core that showcases the artistic talent of our community and the distinct sonic realm of the Island.

  • Acceptance notification: Monday, February 12, 2024
  • Project installation: Monday, March 4 and Tuesday, March 5, 2024.

SELECTION PROCESS
A peer selection panel of arts sector and community representatives will review all application materials and score using the rubric below. The selection panel will recommend the selection of fifteen artworks that will be included in the show.

The City of Charlottetown invites practicing artists or artist teams to submit a concept for a permanent wooden public artwork installed in Connaught Square. The artwork is expected to incorporate or be built using reclaimed wood from historic trees that fell during post-tropical storm Fiona that were salvaged by City work crews. The City of Charlottetown will commission one artist/team to create the work.

Due to the nature of the materials employed for this artwork, the City of Charlottetown invites artists to creatively interpret the theme: RESILIENCE, RECLAMATION, & REGENERATION. The theme builds on Charlottetown’s rich history of urban forestry and the City’s goals to protect urban wildlife, promote biodiversity, and conserve and enhance our greenspaces and waterways. Additionally, the theme relates to the importance of building community resilience to the impacts of climate change and extreme weather events.

The artist(s) budget for all expenses related to this project is a maximum of $15,000.00 CDN (incl. HST). This budget represents the total amount of funds that will be disbursed to the artist(s) and includes all aspects related to the artist fees, design, fabrication, finishing, artists’ overhead, fees, insurance, and installation of the artwork commissioned through this project.

The City of Charlottetown will provide reasonable in-kind support for site preparation, installation, transportation of wood materials and final artwork, and support for logistical considerations as required.

A peer jury will select an artist or artist team and their conceptual design through a single-stage competition process.
