The benefits of Bike Buses are endless! A Bike Bus offers a fun, safe, and healthy way for students to get to and from school while reducing traffic congestion and pollution. It promotes daily exercise, builds independence, and improves focus for better academic performance. Riding in a supervised group enhances safety and road awareness, while parents save time and fuel. Congestion at school drop-off and pick-up is reduced when there are fewer cars. Plus, it fosters friendships and a stronger school community!
Yes, the Bike Bus provides increased safety in numbers and is supervised by volunteers trained in group bike ride training and road safety. Student participants will also receive road safety training before the program begins. The Bike Bus will follow designated safe routes and adhere to all traffic laws. Helmets are mandatory.
Registrations for the Bike Bus will begin the fall. If your school is participating, a sign-up form and permission slip will be circulated mid-September. At this time there will also be a sign-up form for parents and guardians to volunteer.
Teachers can also volunteer as Bike Bus leaders, by completing the same volunteer sign-up sheet.
If you’re interested in starting a Bike Bus in your own community, it will be important to have support from from school administration. We suggest you start by speaking with your school principal and teachers. You should also seek out cycling enthusiasts in your school community. This could include both teachers and parents and guardians of students.

Would your school like to allow upper level students (Grade 6 or Grade 11/12) to volunteer as Junior Bike Bus Leaders? These Junior Leaders would have similar responsibilities to the parent/staff volunteers and would need to attend both the adult group ride training session and the student participant training. There will always be at least one adult on each route.
