The City of Charlottetown is investing more than $800,000 in upgrades to the West Royalty Community Centre to improve accessibility, address priority building needs, and help ensure the facility continues to serve residents safely and reliably.
The improvements will extend the life of the facility, improve day-to-day functionality, and support a safer, more accessible and inclusive environment for community programs, recreation, and gatherings. Planned upgrades include:
- Replacement of exterior doors at the east, west, and south entrances
- Installation of accessible door operators at the east entrance
- Repairs to siding, sidewalks, and roofing
- Accessibility upgrades to the first-floor washroom
- Ceiling repairs, including replacement of the gymnasium ceiling
- Installation of new acoustic wall panels in the gymnasium
- Addition of new stair treads and railings on the first-floor stairs and ramp
- HVAC upgrades
“This project is an important investment in maintaining and improving community infrastructure,” said Councillor Mitchell Tweel, Chair of Charlottetown’s Public Works Committee. “The West Royalty Community Centre is an important gathering place for residents of all ages and these upgrades will ensure the facility can continue supporting local programs, activities and events well into the future.”
Work is expected to begin in mid-June, with completion targeted for fall 2026.
Temporary disruptions are expected while construction is underway.
Residents and facility users may experience intermittent area closures, changes to building access points, temporary sidewalk closures, and minor impacts to parking. The City will work to minimize disruption where possible and will provide advance notice of significant impacts.
Updates on construction activities and potential impacts will be shared on the City’s website and official social media channels.
The City thanks residents and facility users for their patience during construction.
