Transit riders in Charlottetown and Cornwall will soon have more options to travel later into the evening, with expanded weekday service on several T3 Transit routes, beginning Monday, June 15.

In Charlottetown, T3 Transit’s core routes – Routes 2, 3, and 23 – are being extended so that the last departure from downtown will now be at 6:45 p.m., one hour later than the current schedule. After 6:45 p.m., riders can take Route 1 to Royalty Crossing Mall and connect to evening drop-off services available on Routes 2, 3 and 23.

Riders will now have access to evening drop-off-only service every half hour from 7:15 p.m. until 8:45 p.m., and a final service departing Royalty Crossing at 9:30 p.m. This service expansion will help close an evening service gap and provide more flexibility for residents travelling home from work, shopping, recreation and other activities.

One additional evening drop-off service is being added for residents in Winsloe and East Royalty, and a new drop-off only trip from downtown will provide improved service to the east side of Charlottetown and East Royalty.

Transit riders travelling to Cornwall will also benefit from expanded evening service, with an additional weekday departure from Royalty Crossing Mall at 7:15 p.m.

Route 1 will continue running along University Avenue until its final departure from downtown at 10 p.m., with a final return trip from Royalty Crossing Mall at 10:10 p.m. To address customer demand, an additional 6:30 a.m. trip is also being added from downtown to Royalty Crossing Mall, along with increased service during peak evening hours.

The service expansion follows significant investments in fleet renewal as part of the municipalities’ 10-year transit plan. New buses were required to replace aging vehicles before service could be expanded. With fleet renewal nearing completion, T3 Transit is now positioned to begin implementing broader service improvements across the network.

Transit riders are encouraged to use smartphone trip-planning apps such as Google Maps, Apple Maps and the Transit app to plan trips using the expanded service beginning Monday, June 15. Riders can also view updated schedules, route maps and service information at t3transit.ca.

QUOTES:

“As part of developing the capital region’s 10-year Public Transit Plan, we heard clearly from riders that they want transit to fit more easily into their daily lives. Whether it’s getting to work, attending activities, running errands or spending time with friends and family, these service improvements will give residents more flexibility to travel throughout the whole day and make it easier to get home by transit.” – Charlottetown Mayor Philip Brown

“When we asked riders what improvements they wanted to see, expanded evening and weekend service consistently rose to the top. This is the first of several service enhancements planned for this year as we continue building a transit system that is more convenient, reliable and responsive to the needs of our growing communities.” – Councillor Trevor MacKinnon, Chair of Charlottetown’s Environment and Sustainability Committee

“The Town of Cornwall is committed to listening to residents and working to address the needs identified. The Town of Cornwall continues to grow, as does the need for additional Transit runs. Transit numbers have seen a steady increase in the Town, with the recent addition of midday runs, and the evening run will add yet another option for residents.” – Cornwall Mayor Minerva McCourt
