Artists Invited to Reimagined Rooted in Art

Call for Artists: Rooted in Art
Posted on 07/08/2026
The City of Charlottetown is inviting Island artists to apply for Rooted in Art, a live outdoor art competition celebrating the City’s urban forest.

This year, the City’s annual Rooted in Art program has been reimagined as a live, nature-inspired art competition. Eight artists will be selected to create original works inspired by trees in Victoria Park using the medium of their choice.

The competition will take place on Saturday, Sept. 12. Artists will have three hours to complete their work on site while members of the public are invited to observe the creative process.

The competition is open to artists of all skill levels and mediums. Artwork must be created on site during the competition and completed on an 18-by-24-inch board, panel, canvas or other backing selected by the artist. Each piece must be inspired by the same City-selected view in Victoria Park. The exact location will be shared with participating artists in advance of the competition.

A panel of judges consisting of City staff, a member of City Council, and a representative from the City’s Arts Advisory Board will award prizes of $1,500 for first place, $1,000 for second place, and $750 for third place. All other participating artists will receive an honorarium of $500.

Since launching in 2020, Rooted in Art has celebrated Charlottetown's urban forest by inspiring artwork that showcases the beauty and importance of trees. The updated competition format offers artists a new opportunity to showcase their creativity while celebrating one of Charlottetown's most valuable natural assets. Trees help cool and clean the air, reduce wind and noise and play an important role in managing stormwater.

Applications are open to artists of all skill levels. Submissions, including a portfolio, may be emailed to [email protected] or delivered to City Hall, 199 Queen St.

The deadline to submit applications is Monday, Aug. 3, at 4 p.m.
