Charlottetown Celebrates Heritage with Annual Awards Ceremony

The City of Charlottetown celebrated its annual Heritage Awards on Friday, Sept. 18, with a ceremony honouring individuals and organizations in the community who have worked diligently to preserve and uncover the City’s heritage.
“Charlottetown’s heritage is reflected not only in the places we preserve, but in the stories, traditions, and experiences that help us understand our city,” said Mayor Philip Brown. “This year’s recipients have each made meaningful contributions to preserving that history and ensuring it continues to be shared. I congratulate them and thank them for their dedication to Charlottetown, Birthplace of a Nation.”
The 2026 Heritage Awards were presented to the following individuals and organizations:
• Richard and Cheryl Jamieson – For the careful restoration of their designated heritage home at 267 Fitzroy Street.
• Lian Zhang – For the promotion of Asian and Chinese heritage and culture in the city.
• L’nuey – For its online digital archive, “Tku Atlasma’lit,” which provides access to a wide variety of documents related to the history of the Mi’kmaq people of Prince Edward Island through the Robertson Library’s Island Archives platform.
• Dilek Yesil – For the creation of Tea and Tales, an immersive heritage storytelling experience presented at The Haviland (Farringford), a designated heritage property built in 1866.
• Ian Scott – For the promotion of built heritage and advocacy for heritage preservation through his writing and lectures.
• Provincial Realty – For the preservation of 49 Pownal Street, a former warehouse built by entrepreneur Owen Connolly in 1886, and the only one of its kind in the city.
• Katherine Dewar – Catherine G. Hennessey Award – For her many years of work researching, documenting and promoting women’s history, as well as her generosity in sharing her vast knowledge with the public via published works, lectures, and exhibits.
The Catherine G. Hennessey Award was established in 2011 to honour the long-time historian, author and heritage activist, and is presented annually to an individual or group whose efforts have increased the appreciation of Charlottetown, stimulated love for the community, or helped shape the city.
“This year’s Heritage Awards recognize an impressive range of contributions, from restoring historic properties to documenting our past, and sharing the culture and stories that are part of Charlottetown today,” said Deputy Mayor Alanna Jankov, Chair of the City’s Planning and Heritage Committee. “These efforts help make our history more accessible and encourage a greater appreciation for the people and places that have shaped our community.”
As part of the awards ceremony, a tribute to historian and activist Catherine G. Hennessey was presented by former City councillor, Kim Devine. A talk by Josh Silver, Red Seal Carpenter and Learning Manager of the Heritage Retrofit Carpentry Program at Holland College, highlighted some of the restoration projects he and his students have worked on.
