Plastic Waste

Plastics Thursday

The City of Charlottetown and Happy Ocean teamed up for Plastics Thursday!

Our "throw-away" lifestyle often creates large quantities of waste from single-use products that we use for just a few minutes. These include products such as coffee cup lids, water bottles, straws, and cutlery. The environmental impacts of these single-use items can be quite detrimental.

In PEI, we are very lucky to have the highest rate of waste diversion in Canada. However, a great deal of the single-use plastics we use still end up in landfills, lakes, parks and oceans where they cause harm to the environment.

To learn more about why single-use plastics can create so many problems, take a look at the resources along the sidebar. And to find out about the City of Charlottetown's efforts to reduce single-use plastic in the city through Bring It Charlottetown, click here.

The COVID-19 pandemic has created a new challenge around waste reduction. To comply with public health regulations, options to reduce plastic waste, such as bringing your own coffee mug, have become more difficult. However, there are still many ways to reduce your single-use plastic waste during these times. Check out the infographic below for Happy Ocean's suggestions!
