Posted on 01/23/2026
The City of Charlottetown is advising residents that extreme cold temperatures are expected this weekend, with wind chill values expected to reach -30 C.

The City is working closely with community partners to ensure supports are in place for vulnerable residents and to prepare for potential power outages. Comfort centres at Jack Blanchard Hall, Community Baptist Church, Grace Baptist Church, Faith Bible Church and the Winsloe Lions Club are ready to open, should the need arise. The Charlottetown Emergency Management Organization (EMO) will provide as much notice as possible regarding the opening of comfort centres. Residents are encouraged to stay informed by monitoring official City of Charlottetown communications channels, including the City’s website and Facebook page for timely updates and instructions.

Maritime Electric has issued a “watch” alert for Saturday, Jan. 24, indicating that electricity demand is expected to be higher than usual. Residents should be prepared to conserve energy if asked.

Individuals experiencing homelessness, or those concerned about someone who may need shelter, are encouraged to contact the PEI Shelter Support Line at 1-833-220-4722 to be connected with available shelter and support services. Additional information on shelter services is available on the P.E.I. government website.

Residents are also reminded to have a 72-hour emergency kit prepared at home or at their place of business. An emergency kit should include:

• At least two litres of water per person, per day
• Non-perishable food and a manual can opener
• A stocked first aid kit
• Prescription and non-prescription medications
• Formula, diapers and other baby supplies, if needed
• Battery-powered or hand crank radio
