About 85 students along with parents and teachers will help launch Charlottetown’s Bike Bus, a pilot project in partnership with West Kent Elementary School and L.M. Montgomery Elementary School.
A Bike Bus operates like a school bus, but rather than a big yellow vehicle, it’s a group of students and parent volunteers biking to and from school safely together. School buses run on gas or electricity; bike buses run on joy!
The City would like to alert residents and caution motorists in the Brighton-Spring Park area and in East Royalty of an increase in student cyclists before and after school. It is urging motorists to please drive slowly through these neighbourhoods and be on the lookout for these group rides.
Beginning on May 8 and 9, students at both schools will participate in a weekly bike bus route to and from school, with West Kent students riding on Thursdays, and L.M. Montgomery students on Fridays, until the end of the school year.
We appreciate Charlottetown residents and visitors' extra vigilance in these areas as these young cyclists navigate their way to school. This program aligns with actions in the City’s Climate Action Plan to partner with the community and encourage the use of active transportation.
The City would like to thank the community partners who made this initiative possible:
• Funding support from The Rotary Club of Charlottetown Royalty
• Training support from Cycling PEI, PEI Active Transportation Coalition, and Injury Free PEI
• Bikes and safety vests provided by the REACH Foundation, Recreation PEI, and go! PEI

*Note to media: the City will be working with West Kent Elementary School to organize a media opportunity on Thursday, May 22. This will allow students and adult volunteers to adjust to their bike route safely for their first few trips before their bike bus is introduced to the media. The City will provide further information at a later date.
