The City of Charlottetown has been awarded the prestigious “Grand Champions” designation at the 31st annual Communities in Bloom (CiB) National & International Awards Ceremony, held in Stratford, Ont. on Oct. 18.
CiB is a Canadian volunteer and partnership-driven non-profit organization that promotes environmental sustainability, enhancement of green spaces and celebration of culture and heritage. The annual awards and symposium bring together national and international community leaders, volunteers, elected officials and industry partners to exchange ideas and best practices in community building and sustainability.
“This award is a reflection of the hard work and collaboration of our staff, Council and community partners,” said Mayor Philip Brown. “We are honoured to be recognized for our efforts to build a beautiful and resilient city.”
Trained volunteer judges visited Charlottetown over the summer to evaluate the overall contributions of municipal departments and council, as well as private sector and volunteer efforts. Cities competing in the Grand Champions category were evaluated across six key criteria: community appearance, environmental action, heritage conservation, tree management, landscape, and plant and floral displays. Charlottetown received a 5 Blooms – Gold rating – the highest possible distinction from CiB – and earned special recognition for its
Climate Action Plan. The plan was developed through extensive community collaboration and includes clear timelines and measurable targets to support the city’s transition to a low-carbon future.
