The City of Charlottetown is seeking applications for the Food Council, an advisory board that brings together individuals with different backgrounds, expertise, and perspectives to tackle issues within the food system using an inclusive and collaborative approach. The Food Council was established in 2018 and strives to improve the existing food system in Charlottetown as guided by the City’s
Food Charter.
The City aims to create a Food Council that is representative of the food system and the community it serves, and individuals from any area of the food system are encouraged to apply. This includes, but is not limited to, the following sectors: production, food retail, food distribution, health and nutrition, institutional, emergency food providers, non-profit food related groups, food processing, culinary arts, academia, individuals having lived experience with food insecurity, and community members at large with a vested interest in food security and the food system.
The food system is a key climate issue, from sector-related emissions to food security, and members of the Food Council will be engaged in the intersection of food and climate change as it relates to the Climate Action Plan. Depending on member interest and expertise, the work could range from research and the development of policy recommendations to conducing public engagement and education.
The Food Council is seeking equitable representation of underrepresented groups and residents who identify as Indigenous, persons of colour, newcomers or refugees, 2SLGBTQIA+, youth (ages 16 – 30), seniors, and persons with disabilities are encouraged to apply.
Eligible applicants must be age 18 years or older and live, work, or own property in Charlottetown and are asked to review the
City’s Public Appointment Policy as well as the
Food Council Terms of Reference.
Applicants are asked to demonstrate any skills, knowledge, and/or lived experience that help inform and guide their perspective on the food system and to outline their desire to contribute to the development of a sustainable, climate resilient food system in Charlottetown.
